Wydaeghe racconta l’emozione dell’esordio su WRC: “Non mi aspettavo di essere a Montecarlo, figuriamo sul podio!”

Quella foto deve averla riguardata tante di quelle volte… La chiamata di Thierry; il metabolizzare di dover correre con un team ufficiale il rally-che-vale-una-stagione all’ultimo anno delle WRC Plus come le conosciamo; l’assenza di test ed il partire subito, a freddo con un nuovo pilota dalla PS1. Cosa sia passato nella testa di Martjin Widaeghe solo lui veramente lo sa.

E poi di champagne ne è passato sopra. E che champagne: il podio del Montecarlo 2021 gli ha fatto letteralmente la ‘doccia’.

Ciao Martjin e benvenuto su Rallyssimo. Allora partiamo dalla foto del podio: te lo saresti aspettato di arrivare sul podio alla tua prima gara su di una Plus? Com’è andata la gara dal tuo punto di vista del sedile di sinistra?

Ciao. Innanzitutto non mi sarei mai aspettato di gareggiare a Monte Carlo accanto a Thierry, quindi finire questo evento sul podio è davvero un imprevisto! Tutti dicono che deve essere stato molto difficile per me, e lo è stato, ma non dimentichiamo che anche per Thierry è stato davvero impegnativo e forse più difficile che per me. Era abituato per un decennio alle sue abitudini e ricominciare da capo in un evento così difficile non è stato facile. Ma sia io che Thierry abbiamo dato tutto per adattarci il più velocemente possibile l’uno all’altro e passo dopo passo tutto stava andando bene. Devo dire che anche in un rally con molte difficoltà, mi sono molto divertito e mi sono goduto ogni singolo minuto.

Riavvolgiamo il nastro. Thierry ti chiama al telefono “Vieni a fare il Monte con me?”. Dev’essere un bel colpo al cuore che il pluri vice campione del mondo decida che tu sia la persona giusta per affiancarlo. Cosa ti è passato per la testa in quei minuti?

Di sicuro sono rimasto molto molto sorpreso, ma non ho esitato. Se Thierry ti fa questa domanda, sai che è molto serio e devi capirlo. Con il supporto di tutto il team HMSG ho preparato il mio rally in brevissimo tempo e sabato mattina sono partito per la Francia per iniziare la preparazione insieme a Thierry.

Come siete riusciti (se avete avuto tempo di farlo) a preparare una gara così difficile? Se non sbaglio tu sei fiammingo e Thierry vallone: hai cercato di avere un’accento francese diverso da quello che sei abituato a parlare di solito?

Come ho detto prima, senza il supporto della squadra e dell’entourage di Thierry, sarebbe stato impossibile arrivare così preparato. Quindi sono molto grato per il loro aiuto.

Dal 2018 sono stato copilota per un altro pilota belga, anch’esso di lingua francese. Per fortuna ho avuto questa esperienza in passato. Ora tocca a me migliorare il modo specifico di pronunciare le parole che uso con Thierry.

Partiamo dall’inizio: già al tuo quarto anno di attività eri nel JWRC (con l’olandese Mats Van Den Brand) poi affianchi Lim Chewon (ndr pilota coreano cresciuto da Hyundai) e De Mevius (ndr pilota dell ‘nazionale’ di rally belga). Una bella carriera. Com’è iniziata e quali sono stati i momenti che la hanno fatto ‘svoltare’?

Ho scoperto la mia passione per il motorsport quando avevo 10 anni. Stavo seguendo mio fratello ai suoi raduni e cercavo di capire come avrei potuto fare quando avrei raggiunto l’età di 18 anni. Mi son preparato per più di 7 anni con simulatori, video, ecc … Sono anche andato a conoscere alcuni co-piloti belgi esperti per chiedere i loro consigli e suggerimenti … Ero ben preparato prima del mio primo evento nel 2012 e da allora ho continuato a lavorare ogni giorno per raggiungere il mio obiettivo: essere su una vettura WRC accanto a un pilota di punta. Nel 2013 ho incontrato per la prima volta Freddy Loix, che mi ha invitato a navigare per lui durante i test di sviluppo Michelin e Skoda. Questo è stato un grande passo per me e per la mia carriera e ha dato una spinta alla mia esperienza. Grazie a questa esperienza, ho potuto entrare a far parte del WRC nel 2015.

Tra i piloti che ti hanno affiancato c’è anche la nostra Tamara Molinaro: com’è il vostro rapporto? La FIA sta spingendo molto nell’ingresso delle ragazze nel mondo del motorsport e Tamara è sicuramente una delle più promettenti.

Nel 2017 ho incontrato Tamara per la prima volta, abbiamo fatto dei rally insieme e abbiamo continuato nel 2018. Fino ad ora siamo sempre rimasti in contatto e siamo diventati buoni amici. Ad essere onesti, Tamara merita davvero di essere in macchina. Ha davvero talento e ha molta fame di fare carriera come pilota di rally. Ha un incredibile controllo della macchina ed è in grado di guidare molto velocemente. È un peccato che non abbia avuto altre buone opportunità fino ad ora. La passione e la motivazione che lei e la sua famiglia hanno per il motorsport è qualcosa che non puoi trovare così spesso. Quindi incrociamo le dita per una bella opportunità per Tamy nel 2021.

Prossima gara Artic Rally Finland. Cosa ti aspetti?

Mi aspetto un rally abbastanza impegnativo. È una novità per quasi tutti e non vediamo l’ora di vedere le tappe dal vivo durante la ricognizione. Sembra che le condizioni siano abbastanza buone e la velocità media sarà alta. Con una preparazione più tranquilla e il nostro test pre-event (ndr. Martjin e Thierry hanno garaggiato ad Otepaa lo scorso weekend), mi sento pronto per questo evento e faremo del nostro meglio per ottenere più punti possibile sia per i campionati costruttori che per i piloti.

1. Hi Martjin and welcome to Rallyssimo. So let’s start with the podium in Monte-Carlo: would you have expected it to arrive on the podium at your first race on a WRC car? How was the race from your “left seat” point of view?

Hello. First of all I’ve never expected to compete in Monte Carlo next to Thierry, so to finish this event on the podium is really the unexpected! Everybody says that this must have been very difficult for me, and is was, but let’s not forget that also for Thierry this was really challenging and maybe more difficult than for myself. He was used to his habits for a decade and to start from scratch again in such a difficult event, wasn’t easy. But both Thierry and myself gave everything to adapt as fast as possible to each other and stage by stage everything was coming together. I must say, that even in a rally with some much difficulties, I took also a lot of pleasure and enjoy every single minute of it.

2. Let’s rewind the tape. Thierry calls you on the phone “Come to make the Monte with me?”. It must be a big blow to the heart that the multiple vice world champion decides you are the right person to support him. What went through your head in those minutes?

For sure I was very very surprised, but I didn’t hesitate. If Thierry is asking this question, you know it’s very serious and you have to spot on. With the support of the whole HMSG team I prepared my rally in a very short time and on Saturday morning I left for France to start the preparation together with Thierry.

3. How did you manage to prepare for such a difficult race in such short time? You and Thierry have different native languages: did you try to have a different French accent than what you are used to speaking usually?

As I said before, without the support of the team and the entourage of Thierry, it would have been impossible to arrive as prepared I was. So I’m very thankful for their help.

Since 2018, I was co-driver for an other Belgian driver, which is also French speaking. So luckily I had this experience. Now it’s up to me to improve the specific way of how to pronounce the words I use with Thierry.

4. Let’s start from the beginning: already in your fourth year of activity you were in the WRC. First in the Drive Dmack Cup (with the Dutch Mats Van Den Brand) then alongside Chewon Lim (ed. Korean driver raised by Hyundai) and De Mevius (ed. Driver of the Belgian rally ‘national’ ). A good career. How did it start and what were the moments that made it ‘turn around’?

I discovered my passion for motorsport when I was 10 years old. I was following my brother to his rallies and I was watching how I could do things different when I would reach the age of 18. I was preparing myself for more then 7 years with onboards, videos, etc… I also went to see some very experienced Belgian co-drivers to ask for their advice en tips… I was well prepared before my first event in 2012 and since then I kept working every day to achieve my goal, being in a WRC car next to a top driver. In 2013, I met for the first time Freddy Loix, who invited me to co-drive for him during Michelin en Skoda development testing. This was a big step for me and my career and it gave a boost to my experience. Thanks to this experience, I could join the WRC in 2015.

5. Among the drivers who joined you there is also our Tamara Molinaro: how is your relationship? The FIA is pushing hard in the entry of girls into the world of motorsport and Tamara is certainly one of the most promising.

In 2017 I met Tamara for the first time, we did some rallies together and we continued in 2018. Until now we always kept in touch and we became good friends. To be honest, Tamara really deserves to be in car. She really has the talent and she’s very hungry to make a career as a rally driver. She has an incredible car control and she’s able to drive very fast. It’s a pity that she didn’t get a good opportunity until now. The passion and motivation that she and her family have for motorsport is something you can’t find so often. So fingers crossed for a nice opportunity for Tamy in 2021.

6. Next Artic Rally race: what do you expect?

I expect a quite challenging rally. It’s new for almost everyone, and we’re looking forward to see the stages in real during the recce. It looks like the conditions are pretty good and the average speed will be high. With a more comfortable preparation and our pre event test, I feel ready for this event and we will do our best to score as much points as possible for both manufacturers and drivers championships.
